Harry Alexander Classic Cars is delighted to offer for sale this exceptional R129 Mercedes-Benz SL in a very pleasing colour combination of Azure Blue/Azuritblau (366) over Helios Nappa Leather (239A).
This SL is complete with original and matching hardtop, a rare blue soft top in excellent condition (black is most common), the original toolkit, owner’s manual, service book, radio code card, wind deflector and unopened factory medical kit. In terms of optional extras, such as heated seats and 10 stack CD player, it also benefits from optional wooden steering wheel and gear selector which were expensive options of the time.
The car drives extremely well and the gearbox and engine are both silky smooth. It really is a relaxing and effortless car to drive. Comfortable on long motorway journeys whilst equally happy being put through its paces on rewarding B roads. We should know! This is our own vehicle, owned by our founder and company director and sadly being sold to fund a property purchase.
Arguably overengineered, the R129 SL had some remarkable party tricks when released in 1989 such as a fully automatically retracting and closing soft top and a roll over bar that popped up in the blink of an eye to protect driver and passenger. All are working perfectly and the hard top release and soft top all function without fault.
With two facelifts throughout its production run of 1989-2001, one in 1996 and again a final, second facelift in late 1998 the SL evolved from a two toned, early 90’s pin up to a late 90’s and indeed early ‘noughties’ car that still looked fantastic and in keeping with competitors.
Whether one of the first or one of the last, all R129’s enjoy a reputation for outstanding Mercedes build quality of a bygone era. Something that sadly dissipated somewhat in the decade that followed after the corporate changes heralded by the arrival of Daimler Chrysler in 1998. You only have to open and shut the heavy doors and climb in the cabin to see and feel just how special these cars are.
As a final facelift September 1998 example, this SL320 has the M112 V6 3.2 Litre engine mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission making it both more efficient and more responsive than 4 speed examples of earlier models. Compared with earlier 6 cylinder engines such as the M104 of 1993-1998, it is also less prone to wiring loom ‘frying’ or headgasket issues.
Any R129 enthusiast will know there are a few expensive things to watch out for such as catalytic converters and gearbox pipes and oil change, both of which have been done on this example. SL SHOP sourced catalytic converters and a new exhaust was fitted to the car in July 2017 at 89,414 miles. In 2020 a gearbox service and oil change was also completed. The car has no rust on the bodywork at all, and no bubbling around the wheel arches which sadly can be common.
This SL320 is available now and located in Bath where viewings can be arranged by appointment. UK delivery at buyer’s cost can also be facilitated.
